Rough Draft Final Paper

So I am really struggling guys. Tell me if you think that this direction is good. I'm worried the topic is too dry. Please comment below!

“Candor is a compliment; it implies equality. It’s how true friends talk.” These words were spoken by Peggy Noonan, an American author and Wall Street Journal columnist. Her statements perfectly encompass the situation pertaining to the LGBTQ community and American society. The general public has made large steps towards acceptance and progress in gay issues but the movement still has many things to fight for. The most influential factor in this movement has been mainstream media’s introduction of gay society into mainstream society. Media’s inclusion of gay issues into mainstream media has positively influenced the acceptance of gay issues by the American public. The combination of news coverage, television inclusion, and social media influence has positively shaped a younger generation much more comfortable with the idea of gay equality. Peggy Noonan’s statement accurately reflects the hopes of the gay community. When gay issues and concepts can be spoken of openly and honestly without prejudice or bigotry, then true equality will have been met.

To understand the changes in gay issue acceptance in media, one must first understand its origins. It was not until February 7th, 1991 that the first homosexual kiss took place on network television. The television show was L.A. Law and ran for eight episodes on NBC. The scene was so controversial that many advertisers threatened to pull advertisements due to its broadcasting. It wasn't until three years later in 1994 that we saw the first advertisement with a gay couple in it. The advertisement was a television commercial for Ikea featuring two men shopping together. We wouldn't see the first gay engagement or wedding on television for almost 14 years. The two aired in 2008 and 2009 respectively. Now almost every major television program has at least one character to represent the LGBTQ community. We even have programs on the air that specifically focus on the community in its entirety leaving heterosexual characters as the minority. So why such a drastic change?

  1. I also think you should talk about transgender representation, and the massive failure on that front by the media. Because, I noticed that compared to the growing representation of gay and lesbian characters, trans characters are still disproportionately un-represented, and when they arerepresented, it's usually as the butt of ugly, transphobic humor. And that could be why transgender folks tend to get it worst out of all the whole LGBTQIAP spectrum.

I mean, Family Guy did that episode where Quagmire's dad transitoned to female, but then they had that sequence where he vomited for ten uninterrupted seconds when he found out that a prostitute was trans. And then there's Ace Ventura which is so ugly in this regard that I might a swell direct you to a link talking about how prooundly fucked up it is: http://freethoughtblogs.com/nataliereed/2012/05/18/ace-ventura-het-perspective/

I really think that this issue needs to be addressed because if we go "And now the problem is solved forever!" with LGBTQIAP rights after gay marriage like we did with race during the Regan years, people will still die because of this, and I think the most profound failure in that area is with trans folks.

  2. I think that what you have so far is really good. I dont think your topic is dry at all because it is something that is a big issue among the US today.Being gays or lesbian is something that is talk about a lot in our society. I agree with the person on the fact that you also talk about transgender because it is also a problem.Along with all the gay and lesbian insults people say transgender is also one of the issues that is also used as and insult. I feel like you should address the transgender group because gays and lesbians in our society each day is becoming something that is not that big of a deal, but transgendered people are still being looked down open is is not as excepted as the gays and lesbians.

  3. Yeah, I think you definitely will want to talk about the transgender community, not only because it's a big issue as well, but because by using the term "LGBTQ" in your introduction, i think it seems like you're implying that you're going to be talking about each aspect of it, not just the gay community. Other than that it sounds good so far. It's definitely not a dry topic at all, it affects a lot of people. So don't worry about that. Good writing on a good topic is never dry.
